Should You Landscape Your Garden?

If you have more than a small town garden, then landscaping your garden will doubtless be one of your considerations. If you have just acquired the land, or you think that it is time for a garden make-over, there are methods of going about it. The easiest way of going about planning a garden, is to first take a good look at the landscape of your garden. This can be tricky if the garden is established and in full flower.

Therefore, it can be better to wait until autumn or winter, so that you can see the true lie of the land. You could make a plan of the garden on graph paper and take a load of photos too. Identify the photos on the back of them and relate them to the grid on your graph paper. There may be bumps and hollows, potholes, rocky areas and even a marsh or a pond to cope with.

These are probably natural features and if you want to alter them, you will have to tackle the fundamental cause. The feature is only the symptom. Like freckles or spots! If you look at the state of affairs in this way, it makes planning simpler.

For example, a rocky patch probably means that the Earth is pushing stones up slowly but surely and if you want to clean it up, you will be picking up stones for the remainder of your life. Similarly, if your wet area is the result of natural drainage from higher ground, you will have to drain it and put in permanent drainage, since it is not going to stop raining for you.

So, you can either work with nature or you will be working against it for the remainder of your life. Either that or paying someone else to do it for you. Another point is that the flora and fauna that uses your locale does so because of how it is. If you change the landscape, your current range of flora and fauna might move on or just die. A lot depends on how much land we are chatting about, but in general, I would say that the larger the area, the more you should leave it alone.

On the other hand, you can put in features more easily than remove them. For example, if you have an area with poor soil, you could improve it with compost or put a pond there. Shade and existing fences or sheds should also be marked on your graph paper, although being man-made, these are simpler to do away with or modify.

Next you should make up your mind what kind of garden you want, within the constraints of the existing landscape, how much work you are prepared to put into it and how much money you want to spend on it. Improving the natural features of the land is the easiest way of landscaping your garden.

If you have a swampy area, why not put a low wall around it and turn it into a pond? If you have a rocky patch, why not gather up the stones and create a rockery? If you have a couple of trees, try growing wisteria, honeysuckle or vines through them.

If you are in the shade, buy flowers that prefer the shade and vice-versa. It is a struggle to go against nature and unless you have a good reason to do it, it is not really worthwhile. Then build a patio or deck and sit outside and enjoy all the landscaping that you have saved yourself in your garden.

The Advantages Of Speed Reading

What have you been reading lately? In a gathering, you can soon see who the broad-spectrum readers are, since wide readers are often quick thinkers and good public speakers too. They quickly win the adulation, respect, and fellowship of others. After all, reading expands the mind and many people see it as one of the most satisfying pleasures known to mankind, being a combination, as it is, of mental agility and physical relaxation well above the level offered by television or the cinema.

Reading is mostly a mental activity, as you read with your mind and use your imagination to depict the setting of the action thriller you are reading. You use your mind to imagine the pleasure that the main characters in the story are experiencing as the plot unfolds; or you contemplate the different arguments and ideas introduced by the author of that self-help book you are reading.

Learning how to read properly helps you to develop a wide knowledge of words by reading different kinds of books. A skillful reader recognizes a wide range of vocabulary. The reader may not understand exactly what every word means, but he/she will have a general idea of what the sentence is trying to convey.

The act of reading makes you more alert and more interested in hitherto unknown words. Some readers even develop ‘the dictionary habit’, which means that whenever they come across a strange word, they attempt to work out what it possibly means from the context. If they are stumped, they refer to a dictionary.

Likewise, reading develops intellectual curiosity by exposing you to a variety of subjects. You learn to read by reading books of increasing difficulty and variety. As in other forms of education, you learn by actually doing and as you are reading you automatically learn about the subject matter of the book too!

Reading teaches you to have an active and open mind. Merely understanding the writers idea is not really good enough, you must have a reply to what you read. Be an active, not a passive, reader. Try to develop the habit of drawing your own conclusions, the habit of active thinking, of agreeing or disagreeing with the author. Always keep your mind open; understand and weigh the ideas that you read. A practical part of active reading is the development of one’s own conclusions.

Now let me introduce you to the concept of speed reading. All of the above applies three, four, eight, nine, even ten times over, because speed readers can read that much faster than the average reader! Consider that … being able to read, comprehend and remember all those books. You would certainly become well-read in your subject far more quickly than others. Just think how that could help you at work or in school or college …

Let me share four primary rules for effective reading and better comprehension:

1) Try to read more and more every month. Remember the saying that practice makes perfect. 2) Develop the habit of reading for main ideas, ie look for the subject and predicate – the main ideas 3) Learn to read with focus and concentration. Think of what you are reading. Good readers read with understanding. 4) Learn to budget your time. Experiment with your reading time. Try purposely to read faster. Give yourself a time limit on a specific piece that you are reading.

Reading is a wonderfully stimulating mental activity. It expands your reality and capability. You have so much to gain in discovering the joys of reading. So, go ahead and take down a book right now.

Are you a Divorced Dad? Dating for Single Dads is Easy!

Are you a divorced dad? So what? As long as dating for single dads is easy! Can a divorced Dad be a great father? Perhaps a divorced guy should also ask: “Why not?” Just because you’re not divorced, it does not mean that you are not a great father. It’s really such a pity that our society considers someone as a dead beat parent just because he’s divorced. There are a lot of wonderful divorced fathers out there and you can learn a lot from them.

Realizing the Situation… You have got to understand that children suffer greatly from having only one parent. It could be because they had angry parents, or because of separation anxiety or any number of things: it’s tough for children whose parents are divorced, getting divorced, or who are single.

Preserving a relationship with the kids need sacrifice. Usually, both mother and father have to be able to set aside their differences long enough to inspect the damage that they have both caused to their children. More often than not, parents get so engrossed with their emotional pain that they fail to notice that their children suffer even more than they do.

If you are a single parent this is even more difficult. Dating for Dads and dating for mothers is the answer – don’t rush into things, but children need two parents and when you’re ready, you should get another partner.

Investigations show that when both parents make a deliberate effort to stay friendly to each other, then they will have more successful and stable children. What else do you need to know? Kids require a parent of each sex. Never think that dating for single dads or single mother is out of the question. In fact, it is important for the children. But you knew that already, didn’t you?

A Formal Study: To emphasize the importance of a father’s closeness to his children, the State University of Arizona conducted a study of college students whose parents were divorced. The researchers observed personality, emotional and mental maturity, health, and even interest in school and success. The researchers found facts that support the idea that whoever had primary custody, it is certain that children need access to adults of both sexes.

Results: The findings are very surprising. statistics quite clearly show that kids who have only one parent have healthier and more mature relationships than their parents and make a conscious effort of keeping their family together.

Just over 60% of the children involved in the study asserted that their mother or, whoever had primary custodianship over them, moved them at least an hour’s drive away from where the other parent lived. The students were particularly worried about getting caught in the crossfire. Furthermore, when they stayed with one parent, future financial help (like for school or college) lessened. For example, if they stayed with Dad, Mum gave less when college came, and vice versa. So, the fact is that the 1 hour distance between them already had a negative effect on the children.

There will be emotional disturbance, it cannot really be prevented, but upon closer inspection of the children involved, it was clearly shown that those whose parents stayed close to them had a better emotional disposition and a better mentally too.

Summary: All in all, the case study shows that divorce does affect children. The way the parents treat each other and the distance they live from their children does have a significant impact that could determine whether the child succeeds or not. It is difficult to make friends with an ex-wife after all that has been said and done, but it will be more difficult for you as a divorced dad, when in the future, you see your children suffer the consequences of your actions.

As a single Dad, it is really up to you. You owe it to yourself and to your children to make first step to keeping close to your children.

Single men are in high demand, so if you want to know who is looking for you in your area, please go to our web site http://dating.the-real-way.com

Strategies for Preventing Acne

Most people with acne try to treat their broken skin with creams, face washes, soaps, lotions and treatments. However, the easiest way to cure acne is by changing your diet and getting rid of acne-causing items such as fried food. A healthy diet, rich in organic unprocessed foods such as vegetables, fruits, grains and beans is the first recommendation for curing acne.

Foods with trans-fatty acids, milk, milk products, margarine, shortening and man-made hydrogenated vegetable oils, as well as oily foods, should consumed. It seems that the prevalence of acne in the United States is made worse by the average American diet. Americans typically eat fried food in great quantities, usually cooked in the most damaging of fats and oils.

However, not all fats are bad for you, but the fats and oils that the typical American uses make them more susceptible to develop acne and other skin problems. Items that can cause are ice cream, cheese, bacon, chocolate and milk. Furthermore, acne can’t actually be cured using external skin creams and expensive soaps because the root cause of the condition lies beneath the skin.

Pimples, spots and blemishes are caused by bacteria and other irritants lying underneath the skin’s oil glands and hair follicles, which are generally caused as a result of insufficient hygiene, squeezing and poor diet.

This poor diet may be caused by too high a proportion of items such as processed, fatty, fried and sugary foods in your diet. A diet that is good for your skin must consist of raw and lightly cooked vegetables, especially green, leafy vegetables that are rich in valuable trace minerals and fibre. Fresh green vegetables are essential, but you should also include lean protein sources and complex carbohydrates, such as rice, whole-grain bread and potatoes in your diet.

Such fibre-rich foods can help ensure a clean gastrointestinal tract, which is so important in the management of acne. You ought to eat three healthy meals a day in order to provide you with sufficient vital nutrients and decrease your craving for sugary or/and fatty, fried food.

You should eat lots more food that is rich in vitamin A, like apricots, watermelons, and broccoli, as well as lean beef, nuts, beans and whole grains, because they are rich in zinc, which is also be useful in preventing acne breakouts. It’s also imperative to drink lots of water to help clean the poisons out that cause acne.

Patio Heaters In Business

If you own a restaurant, pub or any business using outdoor amenities in a temperate climate zone, then you will know that custom is likely to drop off when the weather gets cooler. You know that you would not sit outside shivering yourself, so you do not count on anyone else to do it. The only answer is to modify the outdoor ambient temperature to an acceptable level.

I have seen this done to stunning effect in Prague in October when there were heavy snow storms. People wanted to sit outside and get pleasure from the snow storm as long as they were fairly warm. A person’s primary heat comes from the body and is retained with decent clothing, but it is nice to have a patio heater near-by just to add a glow to your face and hands.

If you have a business that only opens when it is warm enough, then you have an expensive business and these days expensive businesses do not survive long. You need to wring every last cent out of your business real estate and if that means putting patio heaters in, then that is what you should to do.

Patio heaters come in a range of forms, but they are not that expensive to buy. Sometimes you can hire them too. Most of these outdoor heaters run on bottles of propane or butane gas, but there are mains gas models too. There are also electric ones, but they tend to be costly to run, unless you can generate your own electricity.

I think that the best two types are the box type where the gas canister goes inside the apparatus and the heat is directed at foot to knee height and the street lantern style, where the heat comes down from about seven or eight feet in height. The gas cylinder also fits inside these models lowering their centre of gravity and making them more difficult to unintentionally knock over.

These heaters are very safe although patrons should be warned to exercise caution if they have young children with them. A standard heater will keep up to two tables and eight people warm enough to enjoy themselves even when it is snowing.

The hire of a few of these patio heaters or even their purchase will soon be off-set by your augmented custom, especially if your competitors are not using them. My wife and I will never forget our time in Prague, when it was snowing, drinking coffee and eating cake outside, watching people go by while we were as warm as toast due to the restaurateur’s prudence in providing patio heaters.

Electric Bug Zapper

If you aren’t already familiar with the handheld bug killer, you are really going to love it and if you have had one before, I’m sure you’ll welcome it back like an old friend! The electronic insect zapper does just what it says: it zaps bugs. But it does it really, very well.

Any bug that is touched by the wiring of the hand held insect zapper is fried. Smaller bugs like midges and mosquitoes are vaporized with a very satisfying flash and a crack. Larger bug, like house flies and wasps are killed, but don’t explode like the smaller ones.

Think about it, how many times have these flying bugs taken the edge off an otherwise enjoyable evening in the garden? Or how many times have you not been able to get a good night’s sleep, because you know there’s at least one mosquito in the bedroom. It has happened to me dozens and dozens of times, I know! It is very satisfying to get one’s revenge with the electronic bug zapper.

I don’t like killing things unnecessarily – I’m married to a Buddhist- but mosquitoes? I’m sorry, they have to go. And the hand held insect killer dispatches them without any more ado. No waiting and hoping they’ll fly into the ultraviolet light and then into the mesh. No, one sweep of the electronic insect killer and the mosie’s gone and you can hear whether you got her or not. (I say her, because the sucking mosquitoes always are females – honest, I wasn’t being sexist).

There are two basic kinds of hand held insect killer. There’s the battery operated bug zapper and the rechargeable electric bug zapper. Both work on the same principle, but I prefer the rechargeable kind, although I guess you could use rechargeable batteries too. (I bet they would be more expensive that the bug zapper in the first place). Anyway, I have been using a handheld insect zapper of the rechargeable kind for five years and I am ecstatic about them.

Now-a-days, I spend a lot of time in northern Thailand with my wife, so you can bet your life that I give my electronic bug killer a good work-out almost every evening. We usually eat in the garden in the evening and all socializing is done outside by tradition, especially in the rural areas, where we live, so it comes in very handy. I also use my handheld insect killer to ’sweep’ the bedroom for bugs before we retire at night, just like a CIA agent.

The electric insect killer seems to improve every time I buy one, which makes it difficult to give you definite specifications. The electric bug zappers I bought four or five years ago, sometimes failed within six to nine months of purchase, although their ability to store a charge was less after four or five months.

However, the new electric insect zapper will last 9-12 months and still be very pokey after nine months. My latest one even has a powerful light called a headlamp incorporated into it. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to be for, but if you feel that vengeance is sweet, you can attract mosquitoes with it and then kill them with your electric bug killer.

Common Indoor Bugs

The common indoor bugs we see all over the world are flies, spiders, fleas and beetles. No-one likes to have a bug indoors, so most people go to almost any extremes to get rid of these common indoor bugs. Less common indoor bugs may be woodlice, earwigs, scorpions and millipedes or centipedes, although they are no less unwelcome.

It does not matter where you are in the world, it is very hard to keep these common indoor bugs outside, unless you go to the extremes of keeping all your windows and doors closed all of the time, which is quite impossible. I now live in Thailand and I know for sure that this is not possible.

So, what on Earth can you do? Well, let’s deal with all the flying bugs first, as of all the common indoor bugs, I find them the most obnoxious indoor bug. They are very annoying, buzzing around your head and mosquitoes and other flies can create painful sores and besides that, all flies spread disease. I cannot bear to see them walking on food, knowing that they have probably just come off some dung heap somewhere and now they are spitting on my food to taste it with their stinking feet!

My first line of defence is fine-mesh door and widow screens. They are not dear and can be fitted retrospectively to any window. My window meshes slide, so they will protect only one half of a window at a any one time, but I do not find that a problem. You can still set up cross-winds, by opening two or more windows at opposite ends of a room. I like to see the flies on the mesh struggling to get in by day and the mosquitoes doing the same by night. At night, it is wise to switch on as little light indoors as possible in order not to draw these common indoor insects.

My second line of defence is natural predators – lizards, like Geckos (Jin Jok, in Thai). Some people don’t like them in the house either and I can’t say that I’m all that keen on them indoors myself, but they are difficult to keep out and they do eat hundreds, if not thousands, of indoor bugs every day. I particularly like to see them lying in wait on the outside of the mesh, ready to jump on any bug trying to wriggle its way through the wires.

My third line of defence is a handheld bug zapper. You know, the electric, handheld bug zapper that looks like a toy tennis racquet. They are fantastic at catching and annihilating any flying indoor bug. The inset literally explodes and vaporizes on contact with the fully-charged wires of the indoor bug zapper. If you haven’t tried using one, you really ought to. They are most gratifying. These three defences keep our house pretty much free of flying insects.

The crawling common indoor bugs are not so much of a problem really. Door screens on self-closers will keep 99% of them out and the Geckos will help too. Spiders can get in fairly very easily, but then, I don’t mind them too much as long as they keep out of my way, as they eat other insects too. They are on our side to be honest. However, for those who can not bear to catch them and throw them outside, the handheld indoor bug zapper works a treat on spiders too.

Sometimes, Fleas can be a problem, if you keep cats or dogs, but then if you wash or dust the animal once a month, you should be able to keep these common indoor bugs under control quite easily. However, there are two final measures that we use. Every week, before we go out for the day, we spray every room with fly killer and every six-months we spray any rugs or carpets with an insect killer containing permethrin, which will survive washing and vacuuming for that long without losing its ability to kill common indoor bugs on contact. If you stick with these methods, you will be able to keep your home or office quite free of the most common indoor bugs and the less common indoor bug too.

Patios, Decks And Accessories

Would it not be lovely, at the end of a hard day’s work or on your day off, to relax outdoors on your patio deck? It is a daydream that many people have. But it does not have to be only a dream. You could be actually doing it within a few of weeks. You can either make the deck or patio yourself, if you are useful with your hands or you can hire someone in.

The best thing to do is talk with your contractor about your plans about size and materials. If you want to have a go at making it yourself, take the dimensions to your local builders’ merchant and get them to give you a price. If you need it, they can normally recommend a contractor to you. This can be a good idea, even if it is only to get an idea about price.

There are also plenty of ’standard’ plans available too. You could get a few gardening magazines, you will be able to tell the ones you want by their titles. You could also look online. There is also designing software for this sort of project, it just depends what you want your input to be.

You could just hand the whole task over to your builder, if that is what you would like. However, I would go for a drink with my wife and take paper and pens. Over a drink or two, I would encourage us both to make a few sketchy plans of what we would like. Then you can discuss and amalgamate the plans.

You also have to decide whether you want a raised deck or one at ground level. A raised, wooden deck might help keep the snakes at bay, but a stone patio puts you right in the middle of your garden and flowers.

A consideration, depending on where you live, could be the use of patio heaters. If you think that you may have to use patio heating at various times of the year because of the weather, you might not want your patio deck made of timber. After spending time and money on your new patio deck, you will want to make use of it whether it is a bit chilly or not, which is where the heaters come in.

Furthermore, patio heaters are not that expensive any more and not that dear to run. If you add a mosquito trap and some lighting, you will have a pleasure to enjoy for the rest of your life.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with commercial patio heaters. If you are interested in patio heaters too, please click through to Residential Patio Heaters.

Clinical Depression? What is That?

Depression is a mental illness that is usually characterized by protracted periods of sadness and melancholy, say the experts from the medical field of psychiatry.

But just because someone mopes around and hates the world around him or her, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he/she is suffering from depression, but if this kind of behavior, the feeling of emptiness, loss of self-worth and absolute lack of hope for happiness goes on , then, that individual could be, indeed, depressed. However, there are various kinds of depression too.

Manic or Bipolar depression is characterized by sudden and extreme mood swings – one minute the person is in an elevated state while the next minute (day or week), he or she feels as if he or she is hell.

Postpartum depression is characterized by a protracted sadness and a lengthy feeling of emptiness by a new mother where physical stress during child birth, an uncertain sense of responsibility towards the new born child can be just some of the possible reasons why some new mothers go through this.

Dysthimia is characterized by a slight similarity with depression, although this type has been proven to be a lot less severe, but of course as with any case, it needs to be seen to immediately.

Cyclothemia is characterized by a nominal similarity with Manic or Bipolar depression wherein the sufferer of this mental illness has a problem with severe changes in mood.

Seasonal Affective Disorder is characterized by being depressed only during specific seasons (i.e. Winter, Spring, Summer or Autumn). However, studies prove that more people actually fall ill during the Winter and Autumn seasons. Or they could suffer from severe mood swings, wherein a person’s mood may shift from happy to sad to angry in quite a short period of time.

‘Clinical depression’ or as some call it, ‘major depression’, is the actual medical term for depression. Actually, clinical depression is more a disorder than an illness, since it refers only to those who are suffering from the symptoms that cause depression.

However, in spite of being a real disorder, clinical depression can be treated quite successfully. Doctors are usually highly optimistic that patients suffering from clinical depression will soon be well on their way to good mental health if they are treated as soon as they have been diagnosed. Patients who have sought treatment for clinical depression have proven to be quite successful in their hopes, given that 80 percent of those treated have found relief from their illness.

If you are looking for answers to questions related to clinical depression, the depression section of the health center is highly recommended, as well as books on psychiatry and the Internet, which offers a lot of helpful information, although self medication is very much frowned upon. Clinical depression may not pose as great of a threat as the other types of mental illness, but it is best to leave to the professionals who can safely attend to and cure this disorder.

Clinical depression can be an extremely debilitating illness and is so distressing to suffer or witness. Learn more here: Treating Depression Grab a totally unique version of this article from the Uber Article Directory
